Monumental rectory in Garrelsweer made earthquake-resistant

In the earth-quake area of the Netherlands, Groningen, Bresser made a unique contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage. The listed rectory, dating from 1931 and weighing approximately 300 tonnes, was jacked up by about one metre to make space for an innovative earthquake-resistant structure.

The work formed part of a large-scale strengthening project in the Groningen earthquake region. To improve the building’s resistance to seismic activity, a so-called base isolation solution was chosen. This technology reduces the direct transfer of ground movements to the building, significantly reducing the risk of damage.

Listed rectory temporarily jacked

Jacking up a listed building requires the utmost precision. Using a carefully engineered jacking plan, the entire structure was gradually and controlledly lifted by approximately one metre. This created the space required for the installation of the earthquake-resistant foundation system.

After the base isolation elements had been installed, the rectory was carefully lowered back to its final position.

Preservation and innovation of cultural heritage

This project demonstrates how technical expertise and innovative foundation engineering can contribute to the preservation of valuable heritage. Thanks to the work carried out, the historic rectory is now prepared for the future without compromising its monumental character.
