Iconic screw pumping station relocated for sustainable future

In May, an iconic, 1,660-tonne screw pumping station was relocated over a distance of 150 metres at the sewage treatment facility in Ede, the Netherlands. This impressive operation, carried out by Bresser on behalf of Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe, makes room for circular innovation while preserving valuable industrial heritage. By moving the monument instead of demolishing it, we are contributing to sustainable solutions for tomorrow: with more space for biogas production, more efficient energy use and fewer CO₂ emissions.

Iconic pumping station relocated for sustainable future

In May, an iconic, 1,660-tonne screw pumping station was relocated over a distance of 150 metres at the sewage treatment plant in Ede, the Netherlands.

The municipal monument (brutalism) weighing no less than 1,660 tonnes was first fully excavated and fitted with a structural floor. The building was then jacked up and driven to its new location on the edge of the treatment plant using 64 axle lines.

The relocation of the monumental screw pumping station will make room for the construction of a new central sludge digestion plant. In this way, Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe is contributing to a sustainable future, with more biogas production, more efficient energy use and fewer CO₂ emissions.

The screw pumping station will soon be refurbished and made visible to the public. With this iconic monument, the municipality of Ede is preserving a fine example of brutalist architecture and a tangible piece of water history.
